On the evening of June 17, 2015, a 21 year-old, white male named Dylann Roof walked into Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church during their weekly bible study. As the Bible study concluded with prayer, Dylann pulled out a gun and opened up fire, killing 9 people and injuring 3. One of the survivors said during the shooting Dylan was heard saying, “I have to do it. You rape our women and you’re taking over our country!” He committed these murders in the name of white supremacy. Amongst the deceased was Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, the mother of Chicago Cubs outfielder, Chris Singleton. Instead of reacting with rage and hate, Chris chose love. He credits a scripture he read in college for his decision to forgive rather than hate.
“In the face of adversity, you find out if you’re a fighter or a quitter. It’s all about getting up after you’ve been knocked down.”
